7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Japan; Tsunami Warning Has Been Issued

A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake recently struck off the northern coast of Japan, leading to immediate warnings from authorities about potential tsunami waves reaching heights of up to 3 meters. In response, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has mobilized a crisis management team to promptly assess the situation and ensure public safety, underscoring Japan’s resilience in the face of natural disasters.

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck northern Japan, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami warning for waves expected to reach heights of 3 meters (10 feet). The earthquake, which occurred at 4:53 PM local time (07:53 GMT) in the waters off Iwate Prefecture, was widely felt, shaking buildings even in the capital, Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away.

In an effort to safeguard coastal residents, the JMA urged immediate evacuations from coastal and riverside areas, directing individuals to head to higher ground or designated evacuation centers. “Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted,” the agency cautioned.

Live coverage from the public broadcaster NHK indicated that there were no immediate reports of damage at various ports within Iwate. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced that the government had activated a crisis management team to evaluate the earthquake’s impacts. “For those of you who live in areas for which the warnings have been issued, please evacuate to higher, safer places such as higher ground,” she advised in a statement to reporters.

Authorities are currently working to confirm whether there have been any casualties or significant property damage as a result of the earthquake. Japan, renowned for its robust disaster preparedness, is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area where several tectonic plates converge, making it one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions. The country experiences around 1,500 earthquakes annually and accounts for nearly 18 percent of the world’s seismic activity.

The memory of the devastating magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan in 2011, resulting in approximately 18,500 fatalities and triggering the Fukushima nuclear disaster, remains vivid in the public consciousness. Moreover, officials have increasingly voiced concerns regarding the potential for another substantial earthquake along the Nankai Trough, an 800-kilometer (497-mile) undersea trench located south of Japan, where the Philippine Sea plate is sliding beneath the continental plate.

In light of the recent seismic activity, the JMA has issued rare “megaquake” advisories in both 2024 and December of last year, following intense offshore tremors that intensified fears of a future catastrophic event. The government’s proactive measures reflect Japan’s dedication to safeguarding its citizens in the face of the relentless challenges posed by natural disasters.
