The friendly match was scheduled to feature the local women’s team from Joypurhat against a rival team from Rangpur. However, according to local organizers, the venue was severely damaged by protestors prior to the event. Samiul Hasan Emon, one of the tournament organizers, described a scene where a significant group of demonstrators converged upon the venue, leading to escalating tensions that ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the match.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, the headmaster of the religious school, joined the protests alongside his students. He articulated a strong opposition to women’s football, stating that it contradicts the principles of their religious beliefs. The disturbances in Joypurhat followed a similar incident that occurred in the nearby city of Dinajpur, where another women’s football match was halted shortly before kickoff due to protests marked by physical intimidation. Moniruzzaman Zia, a teacher present at the Dinajpur event, recounted how they had to quickly relocate the participants to ensure their safety.
Despite the challenges faced, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) responded to the incidents with a commitment to inclusivity in the sport. BFF media manager Sadman Sakib affirmed that football is a community-based sport advocating for the rights of all participants, emphasizing that women deserve equal opportunity to engage in football.
