A powerful earthquake struck Bangladesh on November 21, 2025, just outside the capital city of Dhaka, causing significant concern among residents. The government reported that the tremors resulted in at least five fatalities and injured around 100 people. Local news outlet DBC Television indicated that the actual death toll may be higher, with six people confirmed dead, three of whom perished as a roof collapsed in the capital and three pedestrians killed by falling railings.

The 5.5 magnitude quake occurred at 10:38 AM local time, near Narsingdi, approximately 33 kilometers (16 miles) from the heart of Dhaka, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremors came as many residents were enjoying a day off, plunging the densely populated city of 170 million into chaos. Eyewitness accounts reflected the shock and fear felt across Dhaka, with one resident describing it as an unsettling experience, never before having felt the ground shake beneath them.

Reporting from Dhaka, Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury noted that this was one of the most significant earthquakes in recent years, especially given its proximity to the capital. Videos shared on social media captured buildings swaying and residents fleeing in panic. In the immediate aftermath, there were scenes of distress as AFP reporters observed people weeping on the streets, processing the shock of the disaster.

At least three casualties included a medical student, according to the health department. The US Geological Survey had previously alerted officials to the risk of potentially severe casualties and damage from the shaking, which lasted for approximately 26 seconds. The epicenter was located in Madhabdi district of Narsingdi, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department recording the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.7.

The tremors were felt as far away as Kolkata, India, over 325 kilometers from the epicenter, where residents also experienced the unsettling sensation of the quake. In Kolkata, witnesses reported rushing out of their homes and offices, expressing disbelief as they felt the earth move beneath them. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage in India.

As the region begins to assess the damage and care for those affected, this earthquake underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and community solidarity, essential pillars for overcoming such challenges faced by nations like Bangladesh. #WorldNews #MiddleEastNews
