In recent months, the Palestinian landscape has witnessed an alarming escalation in the assertion of Israeli dominance, profoundly affecting the daily lives of those who traverse these contested regions. For younger Palestinians like Taghreed Yahya, who navigate the routes between their towns and city centers, the visual presence of Israeli flags along the roads symbolizes not just occupation but an aggressive alteration of their geographical identity. This situation exemplifies the wider struggle for belonging and memory in a land marked by historical significance and resilience.
A profound sense of anguish accompanies 25-year-old Taghreed Yahya during her daily commute from her town of Kafr Ra’i to the city center of Jenin in the north of the occupied West Bank. Along the main road connecting Jenin and Nablus, she is routinely confronted by hundreds of Israeli flags, a jarring visual representation of Israeli control over a route heavily traversed by local Palestinians.
Yahya noted that the visual transformation began gradually, with flags and outposts appearing like uninvited guests on her familiar route. “It makes the scene that was familiar for years change; all of this naturally leaves sadness, anger and fear, in addition to a feeling of helplessness,” she expressed. Yet, she also indicated that such impositions strengthen the Palestinian connection to the land, memory, and identity.
This aggressive visual display of occupation marks an escalating phase of colonization, which transcends beyond mere physical presence and extends to the psychological manipulation of the Palestinian landscape. Instances such as the uprooting of olive trees owned by the Palestinian community of Arrabeh coincide with Israeli settlers simultaneously adorning bypass roads with Israeli flags, further asserting their dominance.
For Palestinians commuting through these territories, the transformation of familiar landscapes generates a feeling of disorientation. Faten Abdel Hadi, a photographer frequently traveling between Qalqilya, Nablus, Tulkarem, and Salfit, remarked on the rapid changes she observed between June and August, noting that even minor alterations to her well-known geography left her feeling bewildered. “This scene is very painful: the settlers’ mobile homes and flags, and their gatherings on the sides of the main streets, return us to the truth that these people stole our right and our belonging,” she stated.
This phenomenon of visual dominance has intensified since October 7, 2023, when there was a surge in illegal settlement expansion and military actions in the occupied West Bank. More than 1,100 Palestinians have reportedly lost their lives in this turmoil, coupled with the ethnic cleansing of a 66th Palestinian village, according to reports from B’Tselem.
Plans to develop the E1 settlement near Jerusalem threaten to fragment the West Bank, casting a shadow over hopes for an independent Palestinian state. The expansion often begins with settlers establishing a tentative presence, such as erecting a single tent on a Palestinian hill, which paves the way for larger illegal settlements, often sanctioned by government officials.
The Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission (CRRC) revealed that Israeli authorities evaluated 113 structural plans aiming to expand or establish new settlements during the first half of 2026. This shift reflects a strategic initiative by the Israeli government to propagate settlements on a larger scale, reinforcing claims to Palestinian territories.
Khaldoun al-Barghouthi, an expert in Israeli affairs at the Palestinian Research Center, remarked that the deployment of flags serves as a tactical reinforcement of Israeli visibility in Palestinian regions, sending a message that settlers are now a semi-permanent presence. Al-Barghouthi added that this intimidation mirrors the language employed by Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently expressed pride in establishing new settlements, while his far-right ministers contribute to the settler expansion agenda.
“The control they are implementing transcends mere land appropriation; it is a deliberate attempt to sear the Palestinian consciousness regarding their existence on their land,” al-Barghouthi explained.
Ultimately, these dynamics reflect a broader demographic strategy aimed at displacing Palestinian communities from rural areas into isolated urban centers, thereby facilitating the complete alteration of the West Bank’s visual and physical landscape in favor of Israeli settlers.
