At least four individuals have tragically lost their lives following an avalanche that struck a highway construction site in the Chamoli region of Uttarakhand, India, close to the country’s border with China. The incident, which occurred on Friday, left approximately 55 workers trapped beneath a substantial layer of snow, prompting an immediate response from the Indian Army and other rescue teams.
Efforts to evacuate the workers have been intense, with rescuers reporting the successful retrieval of 50 individuals by Saturday. Unfortunately, four of these individuals later succumbed to their injuries. The army has not disclosed the total number of injured workers, but those in critical condition are being prioritized for evacuation due to the urgency of their medical needs.
Chandrashekhar Vashistha, a senior official in the region, confirmed that many of the injured workers have received medical treatment, with some being moved to the Army Hospital in Joshimath. Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, reassured the public via social media that efforts are ongoing to extricate the remaining trapped workers safely and swiftly.
The majority of those affected were migrant laborers engaged in an ambitious highway expansion project, which spans a 50-kilometer stretch from Mana, the last village in India before the border with China, to Mana Pass. Notably, the Indian Army has reported continued progress in the rescue operations throughout the weekend, even as treacherous weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, complicated the effort.
As rescue operations unfolded, they faced numerous challenges, including poor visibility and difficult terrain. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police indicated that rescuers battled through snowstorms in their attempts to reach the stranded workers. Additionally, army doctors at the site have performed life-saving surgeries on critically injured individuals.
Friday’s avalanche comes at a time when India is grappling with increasing environmental concerns in the ecologically vulnerable Himalayan region. This part of India has been beleaguered by severe weather phenomena attributed to climate change, leading to a rise in natural disasters such as avalanches and flash floods. In previous incidents, such as the tragic glacier collapse in 2021 that claimed nearly 100 lives, the call for a reevaluation of development projects in these sensitive areas has intensified.
