Venezuela has made history by reaching its first-ever World Baseball Classic (WBC) final after securing a 4-2 victory over Italy in the semifinals held in Miami. Maikel Garcia played a pivotal role in this triumph, delivering a tie-breaking single during a pivotal seventh inning that showcased Venezuela’s offensive prowess. The team, known for its deep-rooted love of baseball, rallied with a series of four consecutive two-out hits to forge ahead and ultimately secure the win.

In the championship match set for Tuesday night, Venezuela will compete against the United States, which advanced by defeating the Dominican Republic 2-1 in the other semifinal. Venezuelan players are eager to claim their first WBC title, while the United States will be vying for its second crown, making the stakes high for both teams.

Italy’s impressive run in the tournament came to an end after a commendable performance that included a strong start in the semifinals, where they briefly led 2-0 with runs driven in by JJ D’Orazio and Dante Nori. However, their Cinderella story was halted as Venezuela mounted a comeback against losing pitcher Michael Lorenzen.

With a strategic seventh inning, Venezuela’s Gleyber Torres began a rally with a walk, setting the stage for Jackson Chourio, who executed a hit-and-run to position the pinch runner, Andres Gimenez, at third base. Ronald Acuña Jr. then contributed a ground ball that led to an error, allowing Gimenez to score. Garcia’s timely single followed, bringing home Chourio, while Luis Arraez capped the scoring by driving in Acuña for the insurance run.

Venezuela’s pitching staff was instrumental in this victory. Angel Zerpa earned the win, successfully managing the final two outs of the sixth inning, followed by stellar performances from Eduard Bazardo and Andres Machado who each pitched flawless innings. Daniel Palencia sealed the game with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two batters.

As Venezuela prepares to take on the United States, the team’s journey reflects not only their commitment to the sport but also their enduring spirit as they look to achieve a historic victory on the world stage.
