Announced on Friday, the talks are anticipated to play a pivotal role as Washington intensifies its diplomatic efforts to broker a peace settlement for what has been termed Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. Zelenskyy has emphasized the potential for decisive outcomes before the New Year, stating, “A lot can be decided before the New Year.”
A major sticking point in the negotiations remains the issue of territory, particularly the status of eastern Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has remained under Russian control since the early weeks of the invasion. In a recent WhatsApp conversation with reporters, Zelenskyy confirmed that he would address these sensitive subjects, underlining the need for open dialogue regarding Donbas and other related issues.
Moscow’s demands include Ukrainian withdrawal from parts of the Donetsk region, as Russia seeks to assert complete control over the larger Donbas area that encompasses both Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine has staunchly rejected these conditions, instead advocating for an immediate cessation of hostilities along existing front lines.
In an effort to bridge the gap, the United States has suggested the potential establishment of a free economic zone in the event that Ukraine cedes control of contested territories, though details regarding the implementation of such a plan remain unclear. Meanwhile, tensions on the ground continue, as Moscow’s military operations have intensified, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and civilian areas like the southern port city of Odesa, with recent attacks resulting in casualties in Kharkiv.
