A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has achieved a stunning time of 9.32 seconds for a 100-meter sprint, eclipsing the human world record held by the legendary Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt. This groundbreaking feat was reported by China’s state broadcaster and took place during a preparatory event for the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which launched in Beijing on Saturday. The robot, named Lightning, reached a peak speed of 14.5 metres (47.6 feet) per second, demonstrating an impressive advancement in robotic technology.

Lightning’s performance surpasses Bolt’s 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds, established at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009. The Chinese government has actively promoted the development of humanoid robots as part of its strategic initiatives, with the expectation that innovations in artificial intelligence and hardware will catalyze broader applications across various industries, including manufacturing, logistics, and consumer products.

In addition to its sprinting prowess, Lightning also won the Beijing half marathon, completing the 21-kilometer race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds, faster than the elite human men’s world-record pace. Standing at 169 cm (5.5 feet) tall and initially equipped with 95 cm (3.1 feet) long legs, researchers have since extended Lightning’s legs by an additional 10 cm to 1.05 metres (3.4 feet) for enhanced performance ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games.
