As tensions between the United States and Cuba intensify, a recent incident involving an armed infiltration has reignited scrutiny over the historical complexities of U.S.-Cuban relations. The arrival of an FBI team in Cuba to investigate a deadly shootout sheds light on the ongoing political dynamics, while also emphasizing the challenges faced by both nations in navigating their fraught history amidst contemporary issues.
A technical team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrived in Cuba to initiate an independent investigation into a deadly shootout that occurred between local border patrol officers and a speedboat registered in Florida. The presence of the FBI team was announced by the United States Embassy in Havana, following a request from Cuban officials to examine the incident more closely.
On the night of February 25, a group of ten Cuban nationals attempted to enter Cuba via a speedboat, reportedly armed with approximately 13,000 rounds of ammunition along with multiple firearms, including rifles and pistols. The ensuing confrontation led to the deaths of five individuals, while the remaining participants sustained injuries and were subsequently taken into custody for medical treatment, as stated by the Cuban government.
According to a statement from the embassy, the FBI’s visit is intended to facilitate a thorough and impartial review of the events that transpired. An embassy official emphasized that the United States will rely on its own verification process rather than accepting the Cuban authorities’ account as definitive. “Consistent with US policy, we do not make decisions in the United States based solely on what Cuban authorities are stating,” the official remarked. “We will independently verify the facts and make decisions aligned with US interests, law, and protections for our citizens.”
Relations between the two nations have sharply deteriorated since January when President Donald Trump imposed an oil blockade on Cuba following the abduction and imprisonment of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a significant ally of the Cuban government. In a separate narrative, Cuba alleges that the assailants were exiled Cubans from the United States seeking to incite disorder and target military installations.
The incident unfolded when a patrol of five Cuban border guards noticed the approaching speedboat approximately one nautical mile off the northern coast of the island, roughly 160 kilometers from Marathon, Florida. The infiltrators reportedly opened fire from nearly 185 meters away, injuring the patrol’s captain, who continued to guide the vessel despite his grievous wound, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire at a much closer range.
In response to inquiries about the nature of the incident, Trump administration officials have clarified that the speedboat incursion was not a US-backed operation, asserting that no American government personnel were involved in the confrontation.
