The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has called for calm following violent clashes in the town of Nasir, located in the Upper Nile state, that reportedly resulted in civilian casualties and injuries to peacekeeping personnel. The confrontations, which occurred on February 14 and 15, involved the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPSF) clashing with armed groups described as “youth.” The UNMISS made this announcement on February 18, describing the situation as concerning, particularly given South Sudan’s ongoing challenges with political instability following its independence in 2011.
The fighting highlights the fragile nature of peace in South Sudan, a nation rich in oil resources yet grappling with economic hardships and political strife. UNMISS has not disclosed the identities of the armed groups involved, but the SSPSF serves as the national military force under the leadership of President Salva Kiir, who heads the country’s unity government.
In its statement, the UN mission reported that heavy weaponry was used during the clashes, leading to significant distress among both civilian populations and military personnel. Although no specific figures on casualties have been provided, it was confirmed that a UN peacekeeper was injured during mortar fire while conducting a routine patrol. UNMISS representatives expressed their condolences to the affected communities and called for heightened vigilance in ensuring the security of peacekeeping members engaged in their duties.
Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of UNMISS, emphasized the urgent need for all parties involved to exercise restraint and restore order to prevent further escalation. He firmly condemned any acts of violence aimed at peacekeepers, recognizing such actions as violations of international law.
The UN also issued warnings regarding persistent tensions in the Western Equatoria state, indicating ongoing disputes between organized forces. Haysom underscored the necessity for the full deployment of South Sudan’s unified armed forces to stabilize the region. This call comes on the heels of a protracted civil war, characterized by a rivalry between Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar. A peace agreement established in 2018 mandated the unification of armed forces, an objective that has yet to be realized amid ongoing political challenges.
The situation within South Sudan remains complex, necessitating continued international attention and support to foster stability and peace in the region.
