The United Nations has announced a temporary suspension of operations in Yemen’s Saada region, following the detention of eight additional staff members by Houthi authorities. Currently, seven UN agencies, including the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF, are engaged in providing critical support to millions in Yemen, a nation facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The UN reports that more than 18 million people are in urgent need of assistance due to the ongoing conflict.
Haq noted that the suspension of operations aims to facilitate discussions between the UN and the Houthi authorities regarding the release of the detained personnel. He declined to specify how many individuals might be affected by the operational pause but reiterated the UN’s commitment to assisting the Yemeni population. The Houthis have detained numerous UN personnel since 2021, with at least 24 staff in custody prior to the latest arrests.
