The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a grave warning regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that its food stocks have been entirely depleted due to a prolonged blockade by Israel that has persisted for eight weeks. In a recent statement, the WFP communicated that it had distributed its last remaining provisions to local kitchens in Gaza, which are expected to run out imminently. Antoine Renard, the WFP’s representative in Palestine, emphasized the critical nature of the situation, indicating that local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are also facing severe shortages.
Since early March, all forms of humanitarian aid—including food, medicine, and fuel—have been prohibited from entering Gaza. This interdiction disregards a 2024 order by the International Court, which called for the facilitation of humanitarian aid to the area. The limited food supplies available in the local market have seen an unprecedented price surge of 1,400%, exacerbating an already dire situation.
Reports from local media highlight that widespread hunger and malnutrition have afflicted the population, with families resorting to rationing their supplies. The Gaza Government Media Office has issued a stark warning, asserting that the decline in food availability poses a significant risk of starvation for thousands of families. Alarmingly, the organization reported that at least 52 people, including 50 children, have succumbed to hunger and malnutrition-related causes, while over one million children face food insecurity on a daily basis.
Despite these alarming developments, Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, have reiterated their commitment to maintaining the blockade, framing it as a strategic measure to exert pressure on Hamas. While the military asserts that Hamas exploits aid, this assertion faces scrutiny, as key international allies, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, have labeled the blockade as “intolerable.” They have expressed deep concerns over the potential for widespread starvation and a subsequent public health crisis.
Meanwhile, violence continues in the region, with the Gaza Government Media Office reporting that Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of at least 78 individuals within a 24-hour timeframe. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have seen little progress, with Hamas officials in Cairo reaffirming their stance on the need for a permanent resolution while rejecting disarmament as a precondition.
