The United Nations human rights office has reported troubling statistics regarding the ongoing crisis in Gaza, citing at least 613 fatalities among Palestinians at locations managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and near humanitarian convoys. The figures were announced by Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in Geneva. Given the escalating violence, this number is likely to rise, with the Gaza Health Ministry estimating over 650 deaths and more than 4,000 injuries since the crisis began.

The GHF’s distribution of food supplies commenced toward the end of May, adopting a method that has drawn criticism for lacking neutrality and impartiality during a time of extreme humanitarian need. Rights groups have referred derogatorily to these sites as “death traps,” expressing concerns over the safety of civilians attempting to access essential aid.

Amidst this challenging environment, a heart-wrenching testimony emerged from a grieving mother, who lamented the loss of her son while he sought food for their family. She described her son as the family’s pillar of support, emphasizing the desperation that drives families to these GHF centers despite the inherent risks involved.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out the dire situation at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where an overwhelming number of trauma cases have been recorded. The hospital’s facilities are strained as they handle the influx of patients injured near GHF affiliated sites. The WHO has documented that most of these injuries stem from interactions with what have been described as “non-UN food distribution sites,” further underscoring the precarious situation faced by Palestinians.

The GHF’s aid distribution has met with condemnation from various humanitarian organizations and NGOs, including Oxfam and Save the Children, which have called for the immediate suspension of the GHF’s operations. These groups have highlighted the alarming trend of gunfire directed at civilians attempting to obtain food and have expressed concerns over its management of humanitarian efforts.

In parallel, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has advocated for rigorous investigations into the incidents leading to civilian casualties amid attempts to access food. Unlike the GHF, which operates a limited number of sites, UNRWA previously maintained around 400 distribution centers across Gaza, illustrating a significant shift in the humanitarian landscape.

Despite the challenges, there remains resilience and solidarity among the Palestinian community, underscoring the strength of their collective spirit in the face of adversity. As the conflict continues, attention must be focused on ensuring the protection of civilians and meeting their pressing humanitarian needs, reinforcing the call for peace and a resolution to ongoing tensions.
