The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has issued a concerning report regarding the escalating forced displacement of Palestinians in the northern regions of the occupied West Bank. Since January, approximately 40,000 individuals have been forced to evacuate their homes, a worrying development that reflects the broader humanitarian crisis in the area.
UNRWA’s findings come as Israeli forces have continued their extensive operations in the West Bank, particularly in the city of Jenin. On Tuesday, reports indicated that Israeli troops stormed the region, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and the demolition of over a dozen homes in areas near Hebron. The current escalation began with an operation launched on January 21, specifically targeting the Jenin refugee camp and its neighboring city. However, the scope of the raids has since broadened, impacting several other areas of the occupied territories.
According to UNRWA, significant refugee camps, including Jenin, Tulkarem, Nur Shams, and Far’a, have experienced drastic depopulation. The agency referred to the nearly three-week military action as “the single longest in the West Bank” since the onset of the Second Intifada, with these camps previously housing around 76,600 Palestinian refugees.
The ongoing military operations have rendered these northern camps nearly uninhabitable, leading to a distressing cycle of displacement for many residents. UNRWA’s data indicates that in 2024, over 60 percent of the displacement experienced was attributed to operations conducted by Israeli forces without judicial mandates. In 2025, there have already been 38 recorded air raids targeting the West Bank.
Crisis monitoring organizations, such as the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), have reported that nearly 70 people have lost their lives in the recent operations, with at least 44 deaths directly linked to the actions in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. These figures align with information from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, underscoring the dire situation.
UNRWA has reiterated its appeal to all parties involved to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that collective punishment is never justified. Since January 30, UNRWA has found itself without any communication with the Israeli authorities, making it increasingly difficult to address the suffering of individuals in the Palestinian territories. The agency warned that this situation places both Palestine refugees and the UNRWA staff members committed to their service in grave danger.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region continues to demand urgent attention, as thousands grapple with the repercussions of displacement and violence.
