The United Nations has made a clear statement regarding its involvement in the US-backed humanitarian operation in Gaza, emphasizing its commitment to impartiality, neutrality, and independence. The UN’s decision comes in response to a plan proposed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which has sparked controversy and criticism from various quarters. According to the UN, the current operational framework does not align with its core humanitarian principles, leading to its withdrawal from the initiative.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN, articulated this stance, stating that the organization would not participate in an operation perceived as lacking these fundamental values. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, supported by the United States, is set to commence its activities by the end of May. However, this initiative has drawn skepticism from UN officials, including Tom Fletcher, who described it as a “fig leaf for further violence and displacement” against the Palestinian populace in Gaza.
In Antalya, Turkey, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the criticisms surrounding the humanitarian plan. He reiterated that the US is open to alternative approaches that would ensure the delivery of much-needed aid to civilians while preventing misappropriation by Hamas. Emphasizing compassion for the suffering of Gaza’s residents, Rubio expressed willingness to explore new solutions to facilitate aid distribution effectively.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has asserted its readiness to deliver aid and life-saving services across Gaza urgently and effectively. This commitment aligns with the organization’s long-term efforts to support the vulnerable population in the region.
While Israel has accused Hamas of diverting aid meant for the populace, Hamas has vehemently denied these claims. Since March 2, Israel has restricted all humanitarian assistance to Gaza, contingent upon the release of hostages held by Hamas. A recent report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification initiative revealed that the Gaza Strip is facing a critical risk of famine, with around 2.1 million residents at severe risk after enduring prolonged conflict.
To address the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has proposed expanding the limited aid distribution sites in the region. Additionally, it has called for immediate access for the UN and other humanitarian groups to resume assistance during the foundation’s establishment.
