Initial estimates from human rights organizations suggested that over 100 fatalities resulted from this incident; however, the UN’s comprehensive analysis has raised that figure to a tragic total of 134 men and 73 women. María Isabel Salvador, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Haiti, emphasized the urgent need for accountability, urging the Haitian justice system to conduct a thorough investigation into the crimes and hold those responsible to account.
The Haitian government has also acknowledged the severity of these atrocities, particularly the targeting of older individuals, labeling the incident as an act of “unspeakable carnage” while committing to pursue justice for the victims. The UN Security Council has condemned not only the recent killings but also voiced concerns regarding the escalating crisis in Haiti, which includes significant issues of food insecurity and the alarming recruitment of children into gangs.
Haiti is currently facing an unprecedented level of insecurity, prompting the UN to withdraw or relocate certain personnel to safer areas. The closure of the Port-au-Prince international airport due to gunfire incidents further exacerbates the country’s isolation.
