Despite increasing pressure, including calls for his resignation from over 80 MPs and the resignation of four junior ministers, Starmer has so far remained steadfast in his position.
In light of these mounting challenges, Labour figures are coalescing around the candidacy of Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, to potentially challenge Starmer’s leadership. Wes Streeting, a prominent party member and critical voice against Starmer, announced his resignation as health secretary, subsequently expressing his support for Burnham via social media platform X. Despite the evident enthusiasm surrounding Burnham’s potential comeback, the road ahead is fraught with challenges. The Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) must first approve his candidacy in the by-election, a body that previously blocked a similar attempt by Burnham. However, many British MPs believe the NEC is more inclined to offer support this time, with an announcement anticipated in the coming days. Should Burnham secure a seat, he will need to gain backing from a substantial number of Labour MPs—specifically 81 or 20% of the parliamentary party—to mount a credible challenge against Starmer.
Additional political dynamics are at play, with another possible contender for leadership, Angela Rayner, having recently cleared her tax affairs, which may enhance her prospects for a future bid.
