Besigye, who has faced treason charges since late 2024, is now reported to be “unconscious, unable to speak, and unresponsive.” His condition was disclosed via a post on social media platform X by Byanyima, who also serves as the head of the United Nations AIDS programme, UNAIDS.
He has been admitted to the intensive care unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Byanyima has requested that her husband be transferred to a private facility where he could receive care from his personal physician, communicating concerns over the trustworthiness of the public hospital. Frustration is mounting among the family and supporters, as the court has not yet granted permission for the transfer.
Besigye, 70, was observed collapsing in the courtroom while protesting his trial, which he claimed was being conducted without his lawyer of choice. Eyewitnesses indicated that he expressed feelings of being injured prior to his collapse. Ingrid Turinawe, a close confidant of Besigye, noted that hospital officials initially denied access to him, though Besigye’s personal physician was able to visit him hours after the incident.
