Two individuals, believed to be affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), including a female suicide bomber, were killed during an explosion in Kampala, Uganda, near the well-known Munyonyo Martyrs’ Shrine. This incident occurred as thousands gathered to commemorate Martyrs’ Day, a significant cultural and religious occasion for many Ugandans.
The explosion happened in the upscale Munyonyo neighborhood, just outside the shrine where pilgrims honor the legacy of 19th-century Christians who were martyred for their faith. Notably, despite the severity of the blast, authorities reported that no civilians were injured in the event, highlighting the effectiveness of local security measures in averting a wider crisis.
Army spokesperson Chris Magezi confirmed that a counterterrorism unit successfully intercepted the armed assailants before they could inflict further harm. The quick response of the forces facilitated the neutralization of the threats, with Magezi noting that one of the suspects was equipped with substantial explosives. However, preliminary assessments from authorities suggest that the suspects may have ties to the ADF, a group with roots in Uganda that later relocated to the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
