The tragic death of actor Matthew Perry has spurred a broader discussion on the responsibilities of those in the vicinity of individuals struggling with addiction. The recent sentencing of his former assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, highlights the complexities of enabling behavior and the systemic issues surrounding drug access and support. As the legal consequences unfold, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and compassion in the face of addiction.

Kenneth Iwamasa, the former personal assistant to actor Matthew Perry, was sentenced to 41 months in prison in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday in connection with the tragic death of the beloved television star. Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing on the iconic sitcom “Friends,” died from a fatal dose of the hallucinogenic drug ketamine in October 2023, a substance he had grown increasingly dependent on during his struggle with addiction.

Iwamasa, who had no medical training, testified as part of a plea agreement that he injected Perry with ketamine at the actor’s request before leaving to run errands. Upon his return, he discovered Perry’s lifeless body submerged in a hot tub at his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. “I am so sorry to all of you,” Iwamasa expressed in court. “I’m just so sorry to have done illegal acts I will forever regret. I will take that to my grave.”

The sentencing marks the conclusion of a wider investigation that has implicated five individuals who allegedly facilitated Perry’s access to the drug without proper medical supervision. Prosecutors characterized Iwamasa as Perry’s “enabler and supplier,” asserting that he continued to administer ketamine to Perry even after troubling incidents, including more than 25 injections in the days leading up to the actor’s death. Court documents revealed that during his final moments, Perry requested a significant dose, saying, “shoot me up with a big one.”
