Trump promises to reverse Biden’s executive orders signed with an autopen if re-elected.

In the murky waters of American politics, claims and counterclaims often shape the narratives surrounding leadership and authority. Recently, former President Donald Trump’s announcement to nullify executive orders issued by President Joe Biden has sparked fresh discussions on legitimacy and governance, thrusting aging leaders into the spotlight. Trump’s rhetoric, while steeped in skepticism, reflects a broader divisive atmosphere that testifies to the ongoing polarization in U.S. politics today.

Former President Donald Trump has made headlines with his bold assertion to annul all executive orders signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden, which he claims were executed via autopen—a device that mimics a person’s signature. In a Friday social media post, Trump, a member of the Republican Party, alleged that the vast majority of Biden’s orders, estimated at around 92%, were executed without genuine presidential involvement. This assertion follows a long-standing narrative in which Trump questions Biden’s capacity to govern, echoing claims about his age and mental acuity.

“Any document signed by Sleepy Joe Biden with the Autopen is hereby terminated and of no further force or effect,” Trump claimed. He reiterated his belief that Biden, who was 82 years old at the time of leaving office, was not in control of the executive office, an argument that he has invoked frequently during his public discourse. Moreover, Trump threatened legal action against Biden should the latter deny involvement in the autopen process, promising to prosecute him for perjury.

Historically, the autopen has been a legitimate tool in the White House, stretching back to Thomas Jefferson in the early 19th century. Ironically, Trump himself employed the device during his administration. His efforts to challenge the validity of Biden’s executive actions echo a contentious relationship with his Democratic predecessors, particularly Biden and Barack Obama.

In a playful yet pointed jab, he revealed to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman a picture of the autopen that had replaced Biden’s portrait at a “presidential walk of fame” he arranged near the White House Rose Garden earlier this year. This symbolic act further illustrates the ongoing rivalry between Trump and Biden, which has been characterized by intense scrutiny and contentious public debates.

The political landscape became further complicated when Trump and Biden clashed in two presidential elections—2020 and 2024—ultimately resulting in Trump’s victory in the latter after Biden withdrew from the race. Throughout this conflict, the former president has consistently downplayed the legitimacy of Biden’s election, alleging rampant voter fraud without substantive proof.

Legal experts widely dismissed Trump’s claims regarding executive orders and pardons as unconstitutional, emphasizing that U.S. law does not necessitate personal signatures for such actions to be valid. A memo from the U.S. Office of Legal Counsel clarifies that a president does not need to physically sign a bill for it to become law, a stance that bolsters Biden’s position against Trump’s assertions.

As questions about Biden’s age and cognitive capacity lingered, exacerbated by a challenging performance in a June 2024 presidential debate, some members of the Democratic Party urged him to reconsider his candidacy, leading to his eventual withdrawal. This year, Biden also disclosed his battle with advanced prostate cancer, further complicating public perceptions of his leadership ability.

Interestingly, Trump’s age has not escaped scrutiny either, as he too will be 82 should he serve a second term. Recent media reports suggested that signs of fatigue and limited public appearances have become increasingly noticeable during his tenure. In response to criticism, Trump has defended his capabilities by claiming he excelled in cognitive tests, dismissing concerns about his health and age.

The ongoing exchange of allegations between Biden and Trump highlights the complex dynamics of American politics, where questions of agility, authority, and legitimacy intersect in a polarized political climate.
