In a bold vision for the future of naval warfare, United States President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for an unprecedented fleet of “Trump-class” battleships designed to assert American dominance on the seas. These advanced vessels, boasting cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and laser weaponry, mark an ambitious chapter in military innovation and strategy, reflecting not only a commitment to national security but also a response to evolving global threats. With the pledge to construct these mighty ships, Trump aims to revive the era of formidable battleships while incorporating modern capabilities to ensure supremacy in naval operations.
United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to construct a revolutionary new “Trump-class” of battleships, described as larger, faster, and significantly more powerful than any previous American warships. During a briefing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump unveiled his ambition for what he termed a “Golden Fleet,” aimed at fortifying U.S. naval supremacy.
Accompanied by a visual representation of the new vessels, adorned with his image, Trump expressed confidence in the technological advancements that would characterize these ships. “We had big battleships. These are bigger,” he proclaimed, emphasizing that they would possess “100 times the force and power” of older models, asserting that “there’s never been anything like these ships” in naval history.
The projected “Trump-class” battleships are envisioned to be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including artificial intelligence, directed energy lasers, hypersonic missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, and rail guns—cutting-edge weapons currently under development by the U.S. Navy. Each ship is expected to be recorded as the largest battleship in both national and global history, representing a major leap in military capabilities.
Although Trump has downplayed any intent to directly counter specific nations, he remarked that the new fleet serves as “a counter to everybody,” underscoring the broader strategic vision behind the initiative. Initially, two ships will be constructed, with potential plans to expand production to as many as 10 or even 25 over an unspecified timeframe. The establishment of operations for the first two ships, to be named USS Defiant, is said to commence “immediately.”
Trump and Navy Secretary John Phelan framed the new battleships as a modern iteration of the significant warships of the 20th century, which historically included heavily armored vessels designed for naval bombardment. The prominence of battleships peaked during World War II, with the Iowa-class serving as the largest representations, tipping the scales at about 60,000 tons. However, in the decades that followed, advancements in military technology shifted the focus to aircraft carriers and long-range missiles.
Citing the Great White Fleet commissioned by former President Theodore Roosevelt as a symbol of American naval prowess, Trump drew upon historical examples, proclaiming that the new battleships would play a vital role in maintaining military supremacy. According to a recently launched website for the Golden Fleet, the new guided missile battleships will maintain the same size as the Iowa-class but will weigh roughly half as much, around 35,000 tons, and operate with much smaller crews of 650 to 850 sailors.
In addition to the ambitious naval expansion, Trump announced plans to apply pressure on defense contractors to expedite production and control costs, intending to convene with major defense firms to discuss delays and budget overruns. “We do not want executives making million a year and issuing large dividends, while critical production of the F-35s and other military jets stalls,” he emphasized, revealing his commitment to accountability within the defense industry.
