A tragic incident has unfolded at one of Australia’s most beloved tourist destinations, Rottnest Island, where a light aircraft crash during takeoff resulted in the loss of three lives and left three others injured. The privately owned Cessna 208 Caravan experienced difficulties shortly after departing from the island, located approximately 30 kilometers west of Perth, around 4 PM local time on Wednesday.

The victims have been identified as a 34-year-old man from Perth, a 65-year-old woman from Switzerland, and a 60-year-old man from Denmark. Western Australian Premier Roger Cook expressed his condolences, stating that his thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected during this incredibly difficult time. “This incident is particularly distressing given the number of tourists present, including families with children,” Cook remarked at a news conference.

Rottnest Island, known for its stunning beaches, rich natural heritage, and the iconic quokka, had been teeming with visitors when the accident occurred. Premier Cook emphasized the island’s significance as Western Australia’s premier tourism destination, and acknowledged how disheartening it is for such a tragedy to unfold in a location that typically brings joy to countless individuals, especially during peak holiday seasons.

Among those rescued from the crash were a 63-year-old Swiss man, a 58-year-old Danish woman, and an Australian couple in their 60s. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports indicated that the floatplane collided with the water during takeoff before becoming partially submerged. The ATSB is deploying a specialized team of investigators from its offices in Perth, Brisbane, and Canberra to focus on the human factors as well as aircraft operations and maintenance aspects of the incident.

Despite this unfortunate event, Rottnest Island remains a cherished destination, drawing over 800,000 visitors in 2023, as reported by Tourism Council WA. The island, which is also recognized by its Indigenous name, Wadjemup, is celebrated for its pristine coastline and vibrant ecosystems, continuing to offer a unique experience to tourists from around the globe.
