Thailand’s military has expressed readiness to undertake significant military operations in response to escalating tensions along its border with Cambodia, stemming from a long-standing territorial dispute. In an official statement released Thursday evening, the military indicated it has received troubling intelligence suggesting that Cambodia has heightened its military preparedness in the region.
The Thai military declared that it is prepared to take decisive action to protect the nation’s sovereignty if necessary. Operations along the border are reportedly being conducted with care and a clear focus on avoiding casualties, while remaining vigilant and ready to defend Thailand’s territorial integrity.
In a proactive stance, military leaders are scheduled to convene a closed-door meeting to evaluate the situation further. Concurrently, all branches of the Thai armed forces, including the army, navy, and air force, have bolstered their operational readiness, as reported by the Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS). Colonel Chainarong Kasee, commander of the 12th infantry regiment, has mandated that troops ensure all equipment is functioning optimally to meet the evolving security landscape.
The ongoing dispute intensified on May 28 when a brief confrontation resulted in the tragic death of a Cambodian soldier, with both sides trading accusations regarding the initiation of hostilities. This border area, particularly around the historic Preah Vihear temple, has been a focal point of nationalist sentiments and periodic disagreements over the years, particularly following the temple’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
In 2013, the International Court of Justice upheld an earlier ruling that recognized part of the land surrounding Preah Vihear as belonging to Cambodia, advising Thailand to withdraw its military presence. Despite this ruling, Thailand has expressed reluctance to recognize the ICJ’s jurisdiction since 1960 and has advocated for direct bilateral discussions to address the ongoing territorial issues.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has proposed further discussions on additional border disputes, requesting cooperation from Thailand to address these matters in an amicable manner. The Cambodian government has reiterated its commitment to peaceful resolution through established diplomatic channels, including a scheduled meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission on June 14.
As both nations seek to navigate these sensitive diplomatic waters, the focus remains on fostering dialogue and collaboration to ensure stability and mutual understanding in the region.
