As the excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, fans around the globe are eager to see how the knockout stage will unfold. This year marks a significant expansion of the tournament, introducing a new round of 32, which promises heightened anticipation and drama as teams vie for glory. With controversy and camaraderie both shaping the narrative, this year’s World Cup is set to offer a remarkable showcase of athleticism and unity across nations.

The knockout bracket for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is beginning to take shape, with key stages of the tournament approaching. The round of 32 kicks off from June 28 to July 3, marking the first time this phase has been introduced at a World Cup following the tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams.

Under the new format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups, alongside eight of the best third-place finishers, will progress into the knockout phase. Following the round of 32, the tournament will continue with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and culminate in the final on July 19. Additionally, a playoff for third place will be held to ensure all teams have the chance to compete for a top position. The tournament’s schedule is outlined as follows:

– Group stage: June 11 to June 27
– Round of 32: June 28 to July 3
– Round of 16: July 4-7
– Quarterfinals: July 9-11
– Semifinals: July 14-15
– Bronze medal match: July 18
– Final: July 19

An exciting rule change for this World Cup concerns the tie-breaker criteria: for the first time, FIFA will rely on head-to-head records rather than goal difference to determine rankings for teams with equal points. This adjustment notably affected teams like Haiti and Turkiye, which have been eliminated from the tournament due to results from matches against higher-ranking teams within their groups.

To further clarify the ranking process, FIFA has established specific criteria to resolve ties among teams in the same group. Initially, the greatest number of points gained in group matches serves as the primary measure. If teams are still tied, the rankings will then consider superior goal difference and the total number of goals scored in head-to-head matches. Further ties will resort to overall goal difference throughout all group matches, goals scored across all matches, and team conduct scores based on discipline within the tournament.

As the tournament progresses, teams ranked third will also have a rigorous selection process to determine the eight best teams that will advance. Similar steps will apply as with the initial tie-breakers, emphasizing a combination of points, goal difference, and overall discipline.

As of June 20, the following teams have already secured their place in the knockout stage:

– Mexico (Group A): The co-hosts became the first to qualify after a 1-0 victory over South Korea, having also triumphed over South Africa in their tournament opener.
– USA (Group D): The United States followed suit with a decisive 2-0 win against Australia, marking a strong start with an opening match against Paraguay resulting in a 4-1 victory.

Conversely, the following teams have seen their World Cup journey come to an end:

– Haiti (Group C): After a loss to Brazil and a narrow defeat against Scotland, Haiti marked their exit from the tournament, having participated for the first time since 1974.
– Turkiye (Group D): The Turkish team faced elimination after a loss to Paraguay, compounded by an earlier defeat against Australia. This World Cup marks their return to the tournament after a 24-year absence.

The excitement continues to build as the World Cup 2026 unfolds, providing a platform for nations to unite through the love of football and competition.
