Security forces in Syria are currently engaged in fierce confrontations with armed groups loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad in the coastal city of Latakia, an area recognized as a stronghold for the Alawite minority. This escalation of violence has persisted for two days, with reports indicating a significant loss of life, although the precise figures remain unverified.

According to Syrian authorities, remnants of the ousted al-Assad regime orchestrated a calculated assault against government forces on Thursday, prompting a strong response from the state. The police chief of Latakia announced on Friday that control was reestablished in the city and that a siege on vital military and government facilities had been lifted. Nonetheless, clashes continue in other regions of the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a prominent war monitoring group, indicated that over 70 fatalities have resulted from the ongoing conflict, comprising security personnel, militants, and some civilians. The government has not provided an official death toll thus far.

In an effort to regain stability, government forces deployed substantial reinforcements to Latakia and the neighboring town of Tartous, which is also inhabited predominantly by Alawites and serves as a base of support for al-Assad. Additionally, a curfew has been instituted in both Latakia and Tartous, set to last until Saturday.

The unfolding violence poses a significant challenge to interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa as he seeks to consolidate authority within a government still facing the weight of international sanctions and ongoing security dilemmas, particularly in the southwest where Israel has indicated its intent to intervene to prevent military deployments from Damascus.

Reporting from Damascus, Al Jazeera representatives noted that security forces have successfully established control over Latakia and have made strategic advancements in Tartous. However, residents in areas like Banias continue to experience combat between government and rebel forces, reflecting the complex and volatile nature of the current situation.

Turkey has expressed concern regarding potential provocations in Latakia province, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace within Syria and the broader region. The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s call for restraint underscores the delicate geopolitical dynamics at play.

Activists from the Alawite community have claimed that their group has faced increasing violence since the fall of al-Assad, particularly in rural regions such as Homs and Latakia. While al-Sharaa has pledged to foster an inclusive governance approach, no meetings have been scheduled with senior Alawite leaders, contrasting with engagements held with other minority groups, such as the Kurds and Christians.

A collective statement from leaders within the Alawite Islamic Council attributed the recent violence to government actions, contending that military convoys were deployed under the guise of confronting “regime remnants” in an attempt to intimidate and harm civilians. The council has called for international protection of the coastal regions, reflecting ongoing concerns within the community about their security in this evolving political landscape.

As the situation develops, the necessity for dialogues that promote peace and stability in Syria remains paramount.
