The Sudanese army has asserted its control over the main headquarters of the country’s central bank as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize Khartoum, a city that has experienced significant unrest. This development follows a significant military success where the army successfully seized control of the presidential palace, marking a pivotal moment in the current military engagements.
According to Nabil Abdallah, an army spokesperson, the operation resulted in the defeat of numerous militia members attempting to evade capture during the intensive confrontations in central Khartoum. The army’s strategic moves not only aim to reinforce its position within the capital but also to restore order amidst the challenges posed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In response to the army’s advances, the RSF retaliated with a drone attack that tragically resulted in the loss of three journalists and additional army personnel. Reports indicate that RSF fighters, unable to advance, have taken refuge in buildings in al-Mogran, an area of Khartoum that hosts financial institutions and commercial offices. The RSF has strategically positioned snipers in high-rise buildings to monitor movements across the river and to maintain control in parts of the city.
Despite these challenges, there are indications that the army’s continued control over critical infrastructures, including the central bank and key governmental establishments, could fortify its hold on Khartoum and potentially alter the dynamics of the conflict. Observations from the ground suggest that the army has been making consistent, measurable gains over the past several months, particularly in the northern and eastern regions of the capital. However, skirmishes persist in the western areas, where the RSF maintains a notable presence.
Since April 2023, the conflict between the military, led by Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by former deputy officer Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has escalated dramatically, resulting in widespread humanitarian consequences. This protracted struggle has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced more than 12 million individuals.
As the situation in Sudan continues to unfold, there is a collective hope for a resolution that restores peace and stability to the nation. The current military engagements underscore the critical need for dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved to address the humanitarian crisis that envelops the country.
