In the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the recent military advancements by the Sudanese Armed Forces highlight a pivotal shift in control over key regions. As battles intensify in North Kordofan, the dynamics between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reveal not just a struggle for territory but a complex interplay of alliances and ethnic tensions impacting the broader landscape of the nation.
The Sudanese Armed Forces report that they have successfully taken control of the strategic area of al-Mazroub in North Kordofan state, following intense confrontations with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This significant territorial gain is viewed as a critical step toward undermining the RSF’s supply lines and consolidating military control in one of the war’s primary theaters.
In a formal statement released on Friday, the military acknowledged that ongoing clashes resulted in notable casualties among RSF forces and inflicted substantial losses on their combat vehicles. The Armed Forces reassured residents in recently liberated areas to return to their everyday activities, emphasizing their commitment to restoring normalcy.
According to military sources, al-Mazroub represented the RSF’s largest stronghold in North Kordofan. Mohammed Deidan, a spokesman for the Army Special Forces, explained to Anadolu Agency that al-Mazroub serves as a vital link between North Kordofan and West Kordofan. By seizing this location, the Sudanese military enhances its strategic objective of disrupting the RSF’s operational capabilities.
Intensified fighting in the Kordofan region has marked a notable escalation since late 2025, as it emerges as one of the central battlegrounds in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the RSF, which has now entered its fourth year. The Kordofan area, encompassing North, West, and South Kordofan states, serves as a critical juncture where the two factions vie for territory, with the army currently asserting dominance in the north.
Since the conflict’s onset in April 2023, an alarming one in five reported attacks in Sudan has occurred within Kordofan. The military advantage currently lies with the Sudanese Armed Forces in the northern territories, while the RSF maintains control in the western regions, with South Kordofan remaining fiercely contested.
Adding a further layer of ethnic and geopolitical complexity to the civil strife, the Sudan Doctors Network recently accused the RSF-aligned Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) of executing an artillery assault in Dilling, a town situated in South Kordofan. The SPLM-N, a splinter faction of the governing party in neighboring South Sudan, has aligned itself with the RSF and plays an integral role in the RSF’s parallel governance structure in Sudan.
The ongoing conflicts in this region reveal the intricate web of alliances and hostilities that characterize Sudan’s multifaceted civil war, as a nation emerges from its struggles, navigating the path toward stability and peace.
