Sudan’s military announced significant advancements in its campaign to reclaim control over the capital, Khartoum. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported recapturing key regions from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a crucial development amidst the ongoing conflict that has persisted since April 2023.
In recent weeks, the army has successfully regained extensive territories within Khartoum and its surrounding areas. Notably, the recapture of the Kafouri district, a vital and affluent area in Khartoum North, underscores the SAF’s commitment to restoring stability and governance in the region. This district had served as a strategic stronghold for the RSF, housing valuable assets linked to senior RSF officials.
The military’s spokesperson, Nabil Abdullah, confirmed that operations on Friday led to the removal of RSF remnants from Kafouri and nearby areas, reflecting the growing momentum of the army’s offensive strategy. Recent gains have also included the recovery of Abu Quta in northwestern Gezira State, further consolidating the military’s position.
The army’s momentum has secured towns and cities throughout Gezira State, with control now almost fully established apart from Giad in the north and adjacent villages. This offensive is viewed as one of the military’s most significant achievements since the eruption of conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
Despite these military successes, concerns regarding potential reprisals in areas recently resecured by the army have surfaced. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have reportedly documented incidents where activists and humanitarian personnel faced threats and detentions by the RSF. Reports indicate that members of local volunteer rescue groups have been detained at gunpoint, raising alarms about the safety of those providing aid in the region.
The UN human rights office has conveyed grave concerns regarding civilian casualties, documenting at least 18 deaths in Khartoum North since military operations escalated. The complex dynamics of the conflict have resulted in severe humanitarian challenges, with the UN estimating over 20,000 fatalities and 14 million displaced individuals due to the ongoing violence.
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that fosters peace, security, and justice for the Sudanese people. The efforts to restore stability amidst such turmoil highlight the resilience and determination of the Sudanese military and its allies.
