The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday has left the country in mourning following the tragic loss of 241 lives. Amid this devastating incident, one survivor, Viswashkumar Ramesh, has shared a harrowing account of his escape from the wreckage.

Shortly after takeoff, the flight was tragically involved in a collision with a building associated with a medical college. Ramesh, a British citizen, was seated in seat 11A and described how he initially believed he would also perish in the crash. However, he defied the odds when he regained consciousness and sought an escape route.

In a poignant interview from his hospital bed with India’s national broadcaster DD News, Ramesh recounted the moment he realized he had survived. Despite sustaining injuries, including blood on his shirt, he managed to unbuckle himself and access a broken emergency exit. He detailed how the side of the aircraft where he was seated created an opening after impact, allowing him to escape while the opposite side was blocked.

“I could see that there was space outside the aircraft, so when my door broke, I tried to escape through it and I did,” Ramesh said, highlighting his quick thinking in a life-or-death situation. The chaos of the crash was profoundly overwhelming as he witnessed the suffering of fellow passengers and cabin crew during those harrowing moments.

Ramesh was traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was seated in a different row. With a sense of urgency and concern for his sibling, Ramesh attempted to search for Ajay after freeing himself. Reports indicate that he was in communication with family members shortly after the incident, sharing his immediate condition while expressing worry about his brother’s whereabouts.

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited the crash site and later spoke with Ramesh at the hospital, acknowledging the tragedy that struck. Rescue workers remain diligently engaged in recovery efforts, searching for additional individuals who may be unaccounted for, as this incident marks the deadliest aviation disaster in a decade.

In times of such great sorrow, the resilience and strength showcased by individuals like Ramesh exemplify the spirit of survival amid tragedy. The nation remembers the lives lost and remains hopeful for the continued recovery of affected families during this difficult period.
