Saudi Arabia has issued a strong condemnation of remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suggested that Saudi land might be utilized to establish a Palestinian state. The Saudi Foreign Ministry characterized Netanyahu’s comments as an attempt to deflect attention from what it described as ongoing injustices and violations taking place in Gaza, including accusations of ethnic cleansing.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Ministry underscored that the Palestinian people inherently have a right to their land, emphasizing that they are not outsiders who can be displaced at the whim of the Israeli government. “The kingdom affirms that the Palestinian people have a right to their land, and they are not intruders or immigrants to it,” the statement read, emphasizing the historical connection of Palestinians to their homeland.
Netanyahu’s controversial commentary arose during an interview with Israel’s Channel 14, where he mistakenly referred to the need for a “Saudi state” rather than a Palestinian one. His assertion suggested that Saudi Arabia possesses ample land to accommodate a Palestinian state, which was met with significant backlash from various Arab nations. Key regional allies including Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq expressed their outrage, alongside the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, the GCC Secretary-General, remarked that such “dangerous and irresponsible statements” reflect a broader disregard for international laws and treaties as well as the sovereignty of nations. The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed its gratitude to neighboring countries for denouncing Netanyahu’s comments, which resonate strongly with the collective sentiment regarding the longstanding Palestinian issue.
Discussions around the future of Palestinians in Gaza have been further complicated by previous remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who controversially suggested that the U.S. take control of Gaza and resettle Palestinians elsewhere. Such proposals have been uniformly rejected by Arab leaders as amounting to ethnic cleansing, intensifying calls for the protection of Palestinian rights.
As the conflict escalates, reports indicate that Israeli actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 61,700 Palestinians, including approximately 18,000 children, and have devastated much of the territory’s infrastructure. The ongoing humanitarian crisis has drawn international attention and outrage, underscoring the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The relentless pursuit of stability and justice for the Palestinian people remains a priority for Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, as they continue to advocate for their rightful sovereignty and the support of international laws.
