As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations unfolds, Egypt has solidified its status as a powerhouse by defeating the defending champions, Ivory Coast, in a thrilling quarterfinal match that showcased not only skill but also resilience. Mohamed Salah’s impressive performance, alongside his teammates, not only led to a 3-2 victory but also set the stage for a highly anticipated semifinal clash against Senegal, a formidable rival and 2021 champions. This match serves as a testament to Egypt’s determination to reclaim its remarkable history in African football.

Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt eliminated the defending champions, Ivory Coast, to advance to the semifinals of the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 3-2 victory. The Liverpool forward clinched his fourth goal of the tournament in the 52nd minute, reinforcing his pivotal role in the match as they faced significant pressure from the Ivorian squad, which managed to threaten a comeback on two occasions from two goals behind.

Held in Agadir, Egypt displayed tenacity and skill to withstand relentless attacks, thereby securing a semifinal appointment with Senegal, the 2021 champions, in Tangier on Wednesday. Ivory Coast’s struggle was evident from the outset, as Franck Kessie lost possession in the midfield due to a poor touch, allowing Odilon Kossounou to trip over instead of intercepting a pass that led to a target. Omar Marmoush seized this opportunity, scoring in the fourth minute to give Egypt an early lead.

A brilliant defensive block by Ramy Rabia maintained the advantage, and he later doubled the score by heading in a corner kick in the 32nd minute. Five minutes before halftime, however, the Ivorians managed to claw back a goal when Ahmed Abou El Fotouh capitalized on a dangerous free kick by Yan Diomande, which Kossounou headed down.

Salah restored Egypt’s two-goal cushion early in the second half, as Rabia’s long ball caught the Ivorian defense off guard, allowing Ashour to assist Salah with an elegant pass using the outside of his boot. Despite Guela Doue reducing the deficit with a crafty heel goal in the 73rd minute, the Ivorian side was unable to find the equalizer.

Egypt is on a quest for a record-extending eighth AFCON title, showcasing their rich footballing heritage. In earlier matches, three-time champions Nigeria overturned a challenging season by defeating Algeria 2-0, setting them on a path to meet Morocco in the semifinals. The Super Eagles aim to secure their first title since 2013, hoping to alleviate the disappointment of missing out on World Cup qualification, contrasting sharply with Algeria’s struggle in this tournament.
