Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand – Amid ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, representatives from both nations convened in Kuala Lumpur for discussions aimed at solidifying a fragile ceasefire. The strategic talks follow a five-day conflict that erupted along their contentious border, with escalating military presence reported by sources near the frontlines.

Previous mediation efforts by Malaysia resulted in a truce on July 28, successfully halting the immediate clash. However, both countries have accused one another of breaches to the ceasefire agreement, even while officials engage in dialogue in the Malaysian capital. The four-day summit, which began on Monday, is expected to conclude on Thursday, featuring discussions between Thailand’s Deputy Defence Minister Natthaphon Nakpanit and Cambodia’s Defence Minister Tea Seiha. Local Thai parliament member Wasawat Puangpornsri has expressed concern over the volatility of the situation, noting the proximity of troops stationed merely 50 meters apart at the Chong Anma border crossing in Nam Yuen district. This military buildup has hindered the return of approximately 20,000 Thai nationals displaced due to the conflict, which erupted dramatically on July 24.

While inspecting civilian homes damaged during the fighting, Wasawat Puangpornsri underscored the urgent need for reparations. Locals have shared their experiences during the clashes, with some highlighting an alarming uptick in violence earlier in May, leading to diplomatic strains between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
