The situation in Sudan remains critical as the civil unrest continues to escalate, with recent reports from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) indicating that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched artillery shelling in el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. This attack resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives, including women and children, while injuring at least 15 individuals who required medical attention. Observers note that the violence in el-Fasher, which has intensified since May 2024, poses severe risks to a city that serves as a pivotal humanitarian hub for the Darfur region, home to approximately five million people.
The conflict has its roots in a power struggle between the SAF and the RSF that began in April 2023. This brutal confrontation has resulted in devastating consequences, with over 20,000 fatalities reported and approximately 15 million people displaced. Some experts suggest that the actual death toll could be as high as 130,000, marking Sudan as one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian crises.
The African Union (AU) has reiterated its stance against foreign interference in Sudan’s internal matters, following allegations that the RSF may have obtained arms from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This week, the Sudanese government formally severed diplomatic ties with the UAE, citing arms supplies to the RSF as a cause for concern. The UAE has responded to these accusations, deeming them baseless and highlighting the sovereignty of its actions.
AU Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf emphasized that the organization will advocate for Sudan’s sovereignty and resist any external interventions in the ongoing conflict. While the dynamics of the situation are complex, Youssouf emphasized the need for Sudan to provide evidence regarding any accusations made against foreign entities, focusing on the importance of internal resolution in the face of external pressures.
The conflict has also seen an alarming increase in drone attacks, which have primarily targeted significant sites in Port Sudan, the temporary governmental hub and a vital logistical center for humanitarian efforts. In light of these developments, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate halt to the arms flow into Sudan, underscoring the international community’s responsibility to assist in stabilizing the region.
The path forward remains fraught with challenges, but regional leaders and international bodies are called upon to engage constructively to alleviate the suffering of the people of Sudan and support efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
