British Sentiment for Palestinian Rights Grows Amid Ongoing Conflict
London, United Kingdom – Recent polling data from YouGov, commissioned by Action for Humanity and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), reveals a significant shift in public sentiment regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. According to the survey, a substantial majority of British respondents oppose Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in over 55,000 casualties. These figures suggest a growing public awareness and concern for the humanitarian situation in the region.
The poll found that 55 percent of Britons oppose Israel’s current military operations, with an overwhelming 82 percent of those opposing the actions asserting that they equate to genocide. This translates to approximately 45 percent of the adult population in the UK viewing Israel’s actions as genocidal, reflecting a formidable call for accountability and action.
Conducted in early June with responses from 2,010 people, the survey highlights the increasing urgency felt by the British populace. Sixty-five percent of respondents believe that the UK should enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit Britain, indicating a demand for adherence to international legal standards.
Othman Moqbel, head of Action for Humanity, emphasized the prevalent discontent with Israel’s actions among the public and called for the UK government to take decisive measures to seek justice for the affected populations in Gaza. He argued that the government’s current approach not only risks historical reputation but also fails to align with the moral stance of the public.
In light of these sentiments, demonstrations advocating for Palestinian rights have surged across the UK in recent months, reflecting strong grassroots support for the cause. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has recently adopted a more critical tone towards Israel, marking an important pivot in UK foreign policy. In 2024, the UK took a significant step by suspending 30 arms export licenses intended for Israel, responding to allegations of violations of international humanitarian norms.
However, there are calls from critics for more robust sanctions and actions against Israel, especially regarding the supply of military components that could be used in ongoing conflicts. The survey also indicated that among Labour Party supporters, 68 percent express opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza, with 87 percent asserting that they constitute genocide, and 78 percent advocating for the enforcement of the ICC warrant against Netanyahu.
As public discourse continues to evolve, there is a palpable momentum for increased alignment with international law and ethical governance within UK foreign policy. Advocates argue that the British government must reflect the values and concerns of its citizens by prioritizing humanitarian considerations in its foreign relations.
