A new survey of American adults reveals heightened concerns regarding the environmental impact of artificial intelligence, with more than half of respondents expressing worry about its implications for local communities. Conducted by ZezapTV, the study, which engaged 3,424 participants in August, found that 53 percent of Americans are either “extremely” or “very” concerned about the ecological footprint of AI, marking a 12 percentage point increase from the previous year.
This surge in anxiety reflects a wider societal apprehension, with many individuals fearing that AI’s carbon footprint may eclipse that of traditional heavy emitters, such as the meat industry and aviation. Among the different demographics surveyed, Democrats exhibited the most significant level of concern, with two-thirds indicating substantial worries, compared to just 40 percent of Republicans and half of independents.
The survey results highlight growing unease about the impact of data centers, which play a critical role in powering AI and cloud computing, on local utilities. Many respondents articulated fears regarding the potential increases in electricity prices and depletion of water resources in the areas where these facilities are established. Michael Greenstone, director of the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute, emphasized the urgency of these issues, noting the ongoing “massive experiment in real time” with AI technology and its unpredictable outcomes.
Despite facing bipartisan scrutiny, the expansion of data centers across the United States continues unabated, driven by rising demand for digital infrastructure. While states like Virginia and Texas lead in the number of operational facilities, California, Ohio, and New York are also key players in this burgeoning landscape. Prominent figures, including former President Donald Trump, have lauded the economic benefits of these tech hubs, citing job creation as a major incentive for communities to embrace such developments.
However, concerns remain about the significant water consumption associated with AI data centers, which use large quantities of water for cooling systems. While not the largest consumers of water nationwide, these facilities can have significant localized effects, particularly in areas where water is already scarce. As noted by Fengqi You, an energy systems professor at Cornell University, the decisions regarding the placement and operation of these data centers often prioritize corporate needs over community welfare.
