As Brazil approaches its pivotal presidential election, recent polling reveals a fiercely contested race between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro. Both candidates are currently tied in voter support, raising questions about potential shifts in the political landscape as the election draws near. Amidst this backdrop, Bolsonaro faces scrutiny over a film funding scandal that may impact his campaign viability.

In the lead-up to Brazil’s upcoming presidential election, a fresh survey conducted by Datafolha, part of the Grupo Folha media conglomerate, has highlighted the intensifying rivalry between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his right-wing opponent, Flavio Bolsonaro. With the election scheduled for October, the poll results indicate a closely contested race, placing both candidates at 45 percent support among respondents, while 9 percent expressed intentions to cast null votes.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who at 80 years old is seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term, has previously served as president from 2003 to 2011. During his tenure, Lula championed impactful social initiatives aimed at alleviating hunger and increasing federal assistance for impoverished communities, earning him a loyal following among the electorate.

Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator representing Rio de Janeiro and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is aiming to continue his father’s far-right political legacy. Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his involvement in an attempted coup and for efforts to undermine the outcome of the 2022 election, which resulted in Lula’s return to power. Flavio has pledged to advocate for his father’s release if elected.

Despite the ongoing political drama, the new polling data, gathered from nearly 2,004 participants, was conducted prior to a scandal that has recently emerged regarding Flavio Bolsonaro’s film project. The controversy centers around leaked WhatsApp messages that suggest he sought financing from a banker, Daniel Vorcaro, who is currently embroiled in an alleged fraud scheme. Bolsonaro had proposed a film entitled “Dark Horse,” depicting his father’s life, and secured a pledge of million in funding from Vorcaro
