Serbia’s ongoing protests, now entering their tenth month, continue to be fueled by public dissatisfaction with government accountability and infrastructure safety. Recently, tensions escalated in Novi Sad, where police employed tear gas and stun grenades in response to demonstrators’ calls for early elections and an end to the administration of President Aleksandar Vucic, which has extended for over a dozen years.
On the most recent demonstration, thousands convened at the state university campus to express their frustration. The series of protests was ignited by a tragic incident last November, when the roof of the Novi Sad train station collapsed, leading to the loss of 16 lives. This catastrophe served as a catalyst for broader discontent, with many citizens pointing fingers at systemic corruption and negligence regarding state infrastructure, demanding accountability and effective governance.
The slogan “Vucic, leave,” resonated throughout the crowd as protesters marched towards the campus. Initial reports indicated that demonstrators clashed with police, reportedly hurling flares and bottles. In a statement following the altercation, President Vucic announced that eleven police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation, although no information was provided regarding potential injuries among the protesters.
Vucic emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining order, asserting that his administration would not permit what he referred to as the “destruction of state institutions.” He expressed concern over foreign influence, claiming that external security forces complicated the domestic situation, and stated that supporters of his government would be organizing rallies across the nation.
Historically, the protest movement has been characterized by largely peaceful demonstrations. However, incidents of violence occurred on August 13, resulting in numerous injuries among both citizens and law enforcement during clashes across various towns. This shift in dynamic has raised concerns around the state’s response to civil unrest.
The allegations of police brutality have persisted amid a backdrop of student-led protests, opposition parties, and anti-corruption advocates calling for change. Protesters have alleged that Vucic and his administration maintain connections to organized crime and are involved in suppressive tactics against dissent, as well as curtailing media freedoms. Nevertheless, Vucic has refuted these claims, insisting on his dedication to stability in governance.
