Palestinian Journalists Union Reports Israeli Attacks on Media as Part of Silencing Strategy.

As conflicts evolve, the implications for press freedom often become starkly evident, particularly in regions experiencing escalated tensions. A recent report highlights the alarming trend of violence against Palestinian journalists, painting a sobering picture of a profession under siege. Given the essential role of journalism in documenting truth and fostering informed discourse, the ongoing attacks underscore a critical need for international attention and action to protect the rights of the press.

Israel’s sustained campaign of violence against Palestinian journalists has intensified significantly since October 2023, culminating in alarming statistics released by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate. In an official statement, the Syndicate raised concerns over Israel’s systematic approach to suppressing journalistic expression, characterizing it as a deliberate effort to “silence the press through killing, injury, and permanent disability.”

The Syndicate contends that Israeli policy has transitioned from merely restricting journalistic activities to actively targeting the press with lethal force. This shift, they argue, aims to eliminate witnesses, impede the documentation of human rights violations, and undermine the Palestinian narrative. By the end of November 2025, 76 Palestinian journalists were either killed or injured, a statistic that the Syndicate has termed a “dangerous indicator” of the escalating targeting policies adopted by Israeli authorities. The group emphasized that journalists have transitioned from being viewed as “potential targets” to becoming established and frequent targets in conflict zones.

The violence against journalists has intensified notably during recent hostilities in Gaza. High-profile incidents include the fatal targeting of Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif and other journalists, with Israeli forces allegedly mischaracterizing them as Hamas affiliates. Press freedom organizations have condemned these acts, highlighting that no Israeli soldiers have been charged or held accountable for killing journalists, a concerning pattern that raises serious questions about accountability and freedom of the press.

Historically, the targeting of journalists in Palestine is not a new phenomenon. Over the past two decades, numerous Arab journalists have lost their lives, including the veteran Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022. Muhammad al-Lahham, the head of the Syndicate’s Committee for Freedoms, stated that the consistency and scale of attacks constitute what could be classified as international crimes. He asserted that the systematic targeting of journalists represents an official policy aimed at using force to silence media voices.

In December, a report by Reporters Without Borders designated 2025 as the year in which Israel killed more journalists than any other nation. This report described the year as marked by mass targeting, particularly during media-focused events, warning that Palestine has become one of the most perilous locations for journalism worldwide. Al Jazeera journalists have faced unprecedented dangers, with several losing their lives alongside family members while covering ongoing conflicts.

The situation further deteriorated as Israeli strikes led to the deaths of al-Sharif and three other Al Jazeera journalists, illustrating a grim reality where nearly 300 journalists and media workers have perished in Gaza amidst the conflict over the past 26 months. The committee also reported a substantial rise in debilitating injuries among journalists, with many enduring life-altering consequences due to violence not just from the military but also from settlers.

In a detailed account, the committee described specific incidents that exemplify a phase of targeted assaults on media personnel, labeling them as “media massacres.” Key episodes include attacks on journalists’ tents at Nasser Hospital, which resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities. Such actions represent a systematic and coordinated campaign against journalists, specifically targeting them with heavy weaponry amid recognized media zones.

By mid-2025, troubling patterns concerning permanent disabilities among journalists began to emerge, with individuals suffering severe injuries, such as complete loss of sight, amputations, and paralysis. The committee highlighted that most of these assaults took place while journalists were easily identifiable in protective gear and press badges, working in established media gathering locations. This pattern underscored what the committee describes as a sustained assault against the Palestinian press, raising urgent calls for international voices to prioritize the protection of press freedom in volatile regions worldwide.
