Pakistan intensifies military operations in response to increased violence and attacks.

Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistani military has conducted significant intelligence-driven operations over the recent weekend, resulting in the killing of eight individuals linked to violent activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s communication wing, reported these operations occurred in the districts of Bannu and Khyber, during which two military personnel lost their lives.

The military’s intensified efforts against armed groups come amid an alarming increase in violent attacks in Pakistan. The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) has documented at least 71 attacks attributed to armed groups in November alone, predominantly occurring in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, leading to the death of 127 individuals categorized as combatants.

As of November 2024, the number of attacks has exceeded last year’s total, with over 856 incidents reported compared to 645 in 2023. These occurrences have resulted in more than 1,000 fatalities, affecting both civilians and law enforcement personnel. Notably, a tragic incident on November 9 involved a suicide bombing at a railway station in Quetta, Balochistan, claiming nearly 30 lives, including those of civilians waiting for their transport.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which seeks independence for the resource-rich region, has openly claimed responsibility for this attack, asserting that the Pakistani government exploits Balochistan’s natural resources, particularly gas and minerals. Following this tragedy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a comprehensive military operation aimed at separatist groups, signaling a decisive stance against the ongoing violence.

Historically, similar military operations have faced constraints that hamper their effectiveness. Security analysts, including Amir Rana from the Pak Institute for Peace Studies, highlight financial limitations and the political ramifications resulting from large-scale military actions as significant barriers to success. There has been a strategic shift towards intelligence-based operations due to the absence of permanent bases for the Pakistan Taliban (TTP), a group that has shown resilience in its violent activities against the state.

The military has adapted to this evolving landscape by increasingly relying on cutting-edge technology for intelligence gathering and aerial surveillance. However, analysts indicate that achieving effective ground intelligence often proves challenging due to a lack of support from local communities, which is critical for the success of these operations.

As Pakistan grapples with this complex interplay of security and political strife, it is vital for civilian authorities to take the lead in addressing these issues. Encouraging active engagement on social, economic, and security fronts may ultimately contribute to a more sustainable resolution to the country’s internal challenges. The current focus on domestic political rivalries, as noted by analysts, detracts from the development of a cohesive strategy to combat rising security threats effectively.
