As the humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) escalates, the United Nations has reported that over 230,000 individuals have been displaced since the start of the year. This growing crisis has been characterized by escalating violence and instability in the region, which has been affected by conflict for nearly three decades.
The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, has identified this situation as one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian emergencies. The provinces of North and South Kivu, abundant in natural resources, are home to over 4.6 million displaced individuals, underscoring the severe impacts of the ongoing conflicts in this resource-rich area. The M23 rebel group has emerged as a dominant force, seizing extensive territories in Eastern DRC since 2021. Recently, they took control of the town of Masisi in North Kivu.
Bertrand Bisimwa, the leader of M23’s political faction, described their military actions as defensive in nature. The ongoing clashes between the Congolese army and various non-state armed groups have become a significant source of turmoil for local populations, further exacerbating an already grave humanitarian situation. Eujin Byun, a spokesperson for UNHCR, highlighted the alarming nature of the crisis, emphasizing that the conflict has led to widespread human rights violations and substantial forced displacement.
In a particularly troubling development, intense battles in the Masisi and Lubero territories led to the temporary displacement of approximately 150,000 people within a mere six days. While some individuals returned home during a brief pause in hostilities, fresh fighting quickly forced them to flee again, reflecting the volatile and perilous conditions many face.
The local government in Fizi, South Kivu, has appealed for international support, citing that around 84,000 individuals have sought refuge within its borders. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with civilians enduring indiscriminate violence, bombings, and accounts of sexual violence, particularly targeting vulnerable populations, including children.
UNHCR is prepared to offer assistance as soon as access to the affected regions is restored. However, more resources and funding are urgently required to address this worsening crisis and support the afflicted communities effectively.
