Supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan are rallying in Islamabad, advocating for his release from imprisonment, as tensions escalate between demonstrators and law enforcement. The protests emerged following Khan’s call for a march to the parliament, which has resulted in significant security measures being enacted across the capital.
During the recent clashes, one police officer tragically lost his life, while at least 119 others sustained injuries, according to officials from the provincial police in Punjab. The unrest led to the destruction of 22 police vehicles and left two officers in critical condition. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, Khan’s political faction, reported that many of its members were also injured amidst the chaos.
The Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, pledged to ensure justice for the slain officer and expressed his concern over the repeated casualties among police during political demonstrations. This incident marks one of several protests initiated by the PTI since Khan was jailed in August of the previous year. Khan’s supporters have labelled the latest surge of protests as the “final call” for his liberation, with prominent party figures like Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, leading the march toward Islamabad.
In anticipation of the protests, authorities executed a dramatic security lockdown, sealing entry and exit points of the city and implementing internet blackouts. Major thoroughfares were obstructed with shipping containers, while police and paramilitary forces enacted a visible presence in riot gear. Additionally, all public transportation services were suspended, and gatherings were prohibited in Islamabad. Schools in the capital and nearby Rawalpindi have also been closed to mitigate potential disruptions.
Interior Minister Naqvi commended the security forces for their restraint, noting that some protesters allegedly discharged firearms while police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas. Conversely, the PTI accused the government of employing excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, with party members alleging arrests of hundreds of their leaders and workers.
Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif indicated that government officials had previously engaged in discussions with PTI leaders to soothe tensions; however, these talks reportedly did not lead to any resolution. One senior PTI leader countered this claim, asserting that no negotiations had taken place and underscoring their resolve to continue protests until their demands were met, which they consider fundamental to the Pakistani populace.
