Moldova has formally lodged a note of protest with the Russian ambassador in the capital, Chisinau, addressing what it deems as undue interference in its democratic processes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova released a statement on Tuesday detailing the transfer of this “note of firm protest” to envoy Oleg Ozerov. The accusations center on allegations that Russia sought to influence the outcomes of Moldova’s recent presidential elections and a significant referendum concerning its potential membership in the European Union.

According to Moldovan officials, Russia’s actions included organizing ineligible voting, bribery, and fostering security threats aimed at swaying public opinion during the electoral period. The Moldovan government maintained that these tactics were part of a broader strategy to undermine the legitimacy of its democratic institutions. The recent elections, narrowly won by pro-Western President Maia Sandu, were said to be notably impacted by participation from Moldovans residing abroad, who favored the pro-European stance.

Russia, for its part, has rejected these allegations, asserting that it did not attempt to influence the election results and expressing skepticism regarding the legitimacy of Sandu’s presidency. Additionally, in a recent vote, Moldova affirmed a constitutional goal of pursuing EU membership, further signaling its orientation towards the West.

The tensions between Moldova and Russia have escalated in recent years, particularly as Moldova, a former Soviet republic, has gravitated closer to European institutions. This shift has been met with increasing apprehension from Moscow, which perceives such movements as threats to its sphere of influence.

The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned what it characterized as a violation of national airspace by two drones allegedly originating from Russia. This incident occurred on the previous Sunday, significantly heightening the already strained relations. The ministry stated it possessed clear information linking the drones to the Russian Federation, describing the incursions as aggressive and dangerous to civilian safety.

In response to the protest, Ambassador Ozerov contended that the meeting was of mutual agreement rather than a formal summons, asserting that there was no conclusive evidence attributing the drones to Russia. Following a recent attack on Ukraine, Moldovan authorities reportedly discovered two crashed drones—classified as “decoy” devices—which sparked further concerns regarding security in the region.

As Moldova takes these diplomatic steps to address perceived threats, its commitment to maintaining democratic integrity and aligning with European standards remains central to its national agenda. The unfolding situation emphasizes the importance of sovereignty and democratic processes in the region, as Moldova seeks to navigate its geopolitical landscape amidst external pressures.
