The Miss Universe competition, renowned for showcasing beauty and talent from around the world, now finds itself mired in significant legal controversies that could alter its future. With an arrest warrant issued for co-owner Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip due to fraud allegations and her Mexican business partner being investigated for serious crimes, the pageant’s glamorous façade has taken a troubling turn that highlights deeper financial issues within its ownership structure.
The Miss Universe competition is currently engulfed in legal turmoil as its ownership faces serious allegations of fraud and trafficking. Since its acquisition by Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip and her company, JKN Global, in 2022, the pageant has seen its reputation challenged amid financial struggles and legal disputes.
Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip has been issued an arrest warrant in Thailand after failing to appear at a recent court hearing regarding a 30 million baht (approximately 0,000) lawsuit filed by an investor in JKN Global. The Bangkok South District Court confirmed the warrant, noting that her current whereabouts remain unknown.
The financial health of JKN Global has been under scrutiny since the company began defaulting on payments in 2023. In response, the firm sought rehabilitation through a Thai bankruptcy court in 2024, where it acknowledged debts approaching 3 billion baht (about .63 million). Earlier this year, the company faced sanctions from Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for distributing misleading information within its financial statements, resulting in a hefty fine of 4 million baht (4,000). The SEC highlighted that JKN Global failed to adequately inform investors about a significant agreement signed in October 2023, which involved selling 50 percent of its Miss Universe shares to Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantu and his company, Legacy Holding Group USA Inc.
Although Jakrajutatip has stepped down from all executive roles at JKN Global, she retains her shareholding in the company. Notably, she did not participate in the latest Miss Universe pageant held in Bangkok on November 21, which concluded amidst its own controversies, including allegations of the competition being rigged.
Adding to the pageant’s woes, Cantu is also facing legal challenges in Mexico, where he is under investigation for alleged involvement in arms, drug, and fuel trafficking operations across Mexico and Guatemala. Prosecutors have brought charges against 13 individuals in connection with this matter, although Cantu has not yet been formally implicated.
As the Miss Universe competition wraps up in scandal, observers are left wondering about the implications for the pageant’s future and its ownership structure amid these unfolding dramas.
