In a thrilling UEFA Nations League encounter, Mikel Merino showcased his remarkable talent, leading Spain to victory against Croatia and securing their place in the tournament’s quarter-finals. This win not only highlights Spain’s impressive streak of 42 consecutive matches without defeat but also underscores the depth and resilience of their squad as they aim to reaffirm their dominance in international football.
Mikel Merino scored twice to help World Cup winners Spain secure a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Tuesday, ensuring their qualification for the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. The match, played in Split, saw Croatia take an early lead through Ivan Perisic, but Merino, coming on as a substitute, turned the tide for Spain in the second half.
Perisic put the hosts ahead in the first half, pouncing on a rebound after Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon made a crucial save from Igor Matanovic’s effort. Despite Croatia’s strong showing, particularly in the opening 45 minutes, Spain managed to weather the storm and eventually found their footing.
The turning point came early in the second half when Merino, who has been instrumental for Spain throughout the tournament, equalized in the 61st minute. Following a clever assist from Dani Olmo, Merino slotted the ball into the net, igniting the Spanish side’s attack. His impact was profound, and the team capitalized on Croatia’s growing frustration.
Perisic’s night took a turn for the worse when he was sent off with just 10 minutes remaining for a second yellow card after fouling Marc Cucurella. The dismissal proved costly for Croatia, who were unable to regain their momentum and withstand the Spanish onslaught. Merino sealed the victory with a stunning second goal just two minutes before the end, exhibiting remarkable poise and skill as he turned and finished past Dominik Livakovic.
With this victory, Spain maintains its position at the top of Group A3, three points ahead of England, and continues its remarkable unbeaten streak, now extending to 42 games. As they look ahead to the next stages of the tournament, Spain’s impressive form and depth will undoubtedly bolster their hopes of further success on the international stage.
