The impetus for the protest stemmed from leaked audio recordings purportedly revealing a campaign by a member of Sanchez’s Socialist Workers’ Party, Leire Diez, against a police unit investigating corruption allegations involving Sanchez’s wife and close aides.
Diez has publicly denied these allegations, asserting that her actions were part of her own research for a book and not motivated by party interests. She subsequently resigned from her position in the Socialist Workers’ Party, distancing herself from the controversy.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Popular Party, characterized the situation as indicative of “mafia practices” within the government, placing Sanchez at the heart of multiple corruption accusations. Critics suggest these incidents undermine public trust in government institutions.
One of the most pressing matters confronting the Sanchez administration is the “Koldo Case,” which has emerged from allegations surrounding the awarding of public contracts for medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This investigation involves claims against former transport minister José Luis Ábalos and his advisor Koldo García Izaguirre, who is accused of leveraging his influence to secure lucrative contracts while profiting from commissions.
In April 2024, Sanchez pondered the possibility of stepping down as a Madrid court initiated an investigation regarding his wife, Begoña Gómez, over suspected influence peddling. The right-wing group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) has been instrumental in raising these allegations, claiming that Gómez used her position to manipulate the awarding of government contracts.
Sanchez has characterized these inquiries as part of a broader “smear campaign” orchestrated by the political right to delegitimize his administration. Nevertheless, Feijóo emphasized the urgency for Sanchez to call for new elections, declaring that the current government has undermined the integrity of politics and state institutions.
The PP claimed that over 100,000 individuals attended the rally, although official government estimates placed attendance between 45,000 and 50,000. Protesters expressed growing frustration with Sanchez’s administration, calling for accountability and a commitment to democratic principles.
Pedro Sanchez initially ascended to the role of Prime Minister in June 2018 after successfully removing Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party in a no-confidence vote spurred by a widespread corruption scandal involving the PP. Current political sentiment suggests a close contest for support between the Popular Party and the Socialists as Spain approaches its next general election, anticipated in 2027.
