Malaysia’s economy achieved a noteworthy growth of 5.1 percent in 2024, reflecting a vibrant domestic demand and solid investment, which have successfully mitigated a downturn in the commodities sector, as reported by Bank Negara Malaysia, the country’s central bank.
In the final quarter of 2024, the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 5 percent, a slight decrease from the 5.3 percent growth rate recorded in the third quarter. However, this figure surpassed the preliminary estimate of 4.8 percent, signaling robust economic resilience. The annual performance indicates a substantial increase from the 3.7 percent GDP growth observed in 2023.
Bank Negara Malaysia’s Governor, Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, articulated optimism regarding the nation’s economic trajectory, emphasizing that, while global circumstances may present challenges, the growth of the Malaysian economy will be propelled by a vigorous expansion in investment, resilient household spending, and a robust export sector. This optimism is underpinned by the country’s strong economic foundations, which support continued growth.
Alongside this growth, inflation has decreased to 1.8 percent in 2024, down from 2.5 percent the previous year. Contributing to the national economic health, the Malaysian ringgit appreciated by 2.7 percent against the US dollar, demonstrating resilience in the face of fluctuating global markets. The currency also gained ground against the Singapore dollar, South Korean won, and Japanese yen, highlighting Malaysia’s favorable financial position.
Looking ahead, Bank Negara Malaysia acknowledges potential risks stemming from a slowdown in the economies of its trading partners, coupled with the threats posed by trade restrictions and declining commodities production. Despite these challenges, the central bank expresses confidence in several factors that may bolster growth, including the positive impacts of the ongoing technological upcycle, an increase in tourism activities, and the accelerated implementation of investment projects.
The favorable narrative surrounding Malaysia’s economic performance showcases the country as a dynamic player in the Southeast Asian region, with an outlook that emphasizes resilience and expansion in various sectors. As the nation navigates both domestic and global challenges, its commitment to fostering a vibrant economic landscape remains clear.
