A British man has been charged with additional counts in connection with a disturbing incident during celebrations for Liverpool FC’s recent Premier League title victory. Paul Doyle, 53, has been accused of driving his vehicle into crowds celebrating the club’s achievements on May 26, and at his latest court hearing, prosecutors revealed that he now faces an expanded list of 31 charges.
During a session held via videolink from prison, Doyle appeared visibly emotional as new details emerged about the May incident. Merseyside Police reported that 134 individuals sustained injuries resulting from the incident, which occurred as jubilant supporters were leaving the victory parade near the city’s waterfront. The victims included a wide range of ages, with 29 individuals affected, ranging from as young as six months to 77 years old.
Among the serious charges Doyle faces are six counts related to injuries sustained by children, including two infants—one just six months old at the time of the incident. The celebration, which had drawn throngs of fans to the streets of Liverpool, transformed from a festive atmosphere to one marked by chaos and concern as the joyous occasion took a tragic turn.
Originally charged with seven offences, including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent, Doyle now faces even more severe allegations. These include 19 counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, three counts of wounding with intent, and one of affray. During the brief 20-minute hearing, which was attended by relatives of the victims and a large contingent of media, Doyle did not enter any pleas.
Judge Andrew Menary has adjourned the case until September 4, at which point Doyle is expected to respond to the charges formally. A provisional trial date has been set for November 24, with proceedings anticipated to last three to four weeks.
