A humanitarian organization lauded for its efforts in Mediterranean search and rescue operations reported a grave incident involving the Libyan coast guard. On March 12, 2024, while engaged in a rescue mission approximately 40 nautical miles north of the Libyan coastline, the vessel Ocean Viking, operated by SOS Mediterranee in conjunction with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, came under fire from Libyan authorities.

As part of its commitment to saving lives, the Ocean Viking had recently rescued 87 individuals from two separate boats, including many from the conflict-embroiled nation of Sudan. Just as the vessel was navigating towards Italy, it sought to locate a third boat reported to be in distress. During this critical operation, the crew faced a harrowing encounter with a Libyan patrol boat, which was reported to be a 2023 vessel provided by Italy as part of an EU-backed border management initiative.

According to Angelo Selim, the search-and-rescue coordinator aboard the Ocean Viking, the confrontation escalated quickly, with gunfire lasting between 15 to 20 minutes. He described a chaotic scene where the sound of gunshots shattered the quiet, prompting crew members and vulnerable rescued individuals to seek safety. Thankfully, no casualties were reported among the crew or those rescued, although the Ocean Viking itself sustained substantial damages.

In a subsequent statement, SOS Mediterranee condemned the attack as an unacceptable breach of maritime safety, highlighting an ongoing pattern of aggressive behavior from the Libyan coast guard that infringes upon international protocols and jeopardizes lives at sea. The organization stressed the necessity for both national and international authorities to take decisive action against such violations, ensuring the protection of human rights for refugees and migrants.

Frontex, the European Union’s border protection agency, deemed the incident “deeply concerning” and urged for a thorough investigation to be conducted promptly. As the global migration crisis continues to unfold, the Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has committed to stringent measures aimed at curtailing refugee and migrant crossings from North Africa, including enhancing penalties against human smuggling operations.

The Mediterranean Sea remains a perilous route for countless individuals fleeing dire circumstances in their home countries, encapsulating a complex narrative of hope, resilience, and the urgent need for humanitarian support. This incident underscores the critical importance of safeguarding vulnerable populations and ensuring adherence to international maritime law, reinforcing the role of organizations like SOS Mediterranee in advocating for those in need.
