Lebanon’s Higher Defence Council has emphasized the necessity of maintaining national security in the wake of escalating tensions surrounding rocket fire from the Palestinian group Hamas toward Israel. This warning follows a series of Israeli airstrikes, which Lebanese authorities allege constitute violations of a US-brokered truce established in November 2024.

The council, convened under the leadership of President Joseph Aoun, reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to ensuring that its territory is not utilized as a base for actions that could instigate instability or lead to unnecessary conflict. The statement underscored that Lebanon’s sovereignty is paramount, and strict measures will be implemented against any infringement of national security. This position comes amid increased pressure from the United States for the Lebanese government to disarm non-state groups, notably Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas.

President Aoun, who has previously led the Lebanese Armed Forces, has vowed to bring all arms under the purview of the state, although he has acknowledged that the question of disarming Hezbollah presents significant challenges. Highlighting the importance of Palestinian rights, Aoun has also urged that Lebanese stability remains a priority to prevent further escalation.

The presence of Hamas in Lebanon has been established for many years, particularly within camps accommodating hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees. Historically, Lebanese security forces have faced challenges in exerting authority in these areas. In solidarity with Palestinians during heightened tensions, Hamas, along with Hezbollah, has engaged in rocket fire across the southern border into Israel following a major offensive from Israel beginning on October 7, 2023, which targeted Gaza region.

In response to Israeli air raids, which have targeted Hamas leaders in Lebanon, including the group’s deputy chief, Lebanese authorities have taken steps to address both local security concerns and international pressures. Recently, the Lebanese army has detained individuals associated with the rocket attacks launched on March 22 and March 28, although the responsibility for these incidents remains unclaimed and Hezbollah has rejected involvement.

These developments indicate a complex interplay between regional dynamics and internal governance in Lebanon, as officials strive to balance national stability with the rights of Palestinians. As Lebanon navigates these challenges, its leaders emphasize that the preservation of peace and sovereignty remains a cornerstone of national policy.
